You're probably well aware of the tremendous growth and increasing demand
for professional house cleaning services by today's busy and time-starved
dual-income families, single-parent households and affluent homeowners.
That's the reason you're here. But here are some facts revealed in an
industry survey conducted by the
Association of Residential Cleaning Services International from its members in
the fall of 2003 that you may find interesting:
Home versus Commercially Based:
The split was dead even, with 50% based from home and the other half located
in commercial office space.
Annual Sales of Residential House Cleaning
Companies: The overall average sales of survey participants
was $387,192. Average annual revenues for home-based services was
$106,250 compared with an average of $846,428 for those working from
commercial office space.
Franchise versus Independently-Owned Cleaning
Companies: 85% were independently owned compared with 15%
franchise operated, although 41% had considered purchasing a franchise..
Staffing of House Cleaning Services:
The average number of employees per cleaning service was 14 workers.
Seventy-two percent used teams versus 17% who sent out individual cleaners;
eleven percent used a combination of teams and individual house cleaners.
Team Composition: Of those house
cleaning services working with teams, 35% used 2-person teams, 24% worked
with 3 person teams and 41% alternated teams ranging from 2 to 4 people.
Cleaning Staff Compensation: Fifty
three percent of the ARCP Members surveyed paid their house cleaners an
hourly wage, forty percent paid their people a commission and 7% paid their
house cleaners a combination of hourly pay plus commission. The
average starting wage was $8.03/hour.
